At 3:00 p.m. on Sunday (Beijing time), England drew 0-0 with the United States in the second round of the World Cup group stage in Qatar, leaving group qualification in doubt until the final round.
In their 11 previous meetings, England has prevailed eight times, tied once, and lost twice. Even defeating the US with the score of 10-0, England dominated.
England hasn’t yet defeated the United States in a World Cup match, though. The United States defeated England with the score of 1-0 in their two previous meeting in World Cup between the two teams, which took place in the tournament’s 1950 group stage. The second occurred during the 2010 World Cup group stage, when the teams tied 1-1.
The two rosters contain a total of 15 players, with England having six and the United States having nine. They include eight starters.
With Maguire and Stones in the center of defense and Harry Kane, Sterling, and Sacca forming an attacking trio, England continued where they left off. Adams, the team captain, was in charge of the midfield as the United States played in a 4-3-3 formation with Matt Turner serving as the goalkeeper. Pulisic is mainly responsible for the attack.
England controlled the tempo from the start. In the first ten minutes, England planned a delicate attack. Bellingham passed the ball to Sacca, who then passed it back to Kane in the penalty area, where the American defender deflected Kane’s push shot. Pickford seized the right Lutheran ball for the United States in the 20th minute. The United States retreated, and England searched for an opening with the passing ball. It was a dull moment.
The United States kept looking for openings for a counterattack. The United States erupted into action in the 25th minute with a cross from winger Musa that McKenny failed to connect on. In the 33rd minute, the United States had another chance when Pulisic followed up with a left-footed shot that hit the crossbar exactly.
England played another delicate combination in the 44th minute. From Sterling’s pass, Lucshaw raced into the box, and Sacca sent the ball high. Mount’s volley from Sacca’s pass in the penalty area was saved by goalkeeper Turner in stoppage time.
Even though England had the majority of the ball in the first half, the Americans challenged Pickford by producing numerous chances from crosses. Both teams were tied 0-0 at the half.
Both teams did not alter their starting lineups for the second half. When Pulisic ran with the ball in the 57th minute, the referee gave a corner after a long shot went offside. The United States then continued to put pressure on England with several corner kicks, but they were unsuccessful in scoring.
Two changes were made by England in the 68th minute. Bellingham and Sterling were replaced by Henderson and Gralish in an effort to bolster the attack. Both teams made an effort to find weaknesses in the defense of their opponents, but they were unable to produce quality scoring opportunities.
Both teams continue to deploy their troops in the 76th minute. In the United States, McKenny is replaced by Aaron, Durst is replaced by Shakmore, and Sacca is replaced by Rashford in England. Mr. Weah was later replaced by the United States. Weah off the field, with the camera to his side, can be considered to be very significant.
Kane missed with a header ball in extra time. The two teams ultimately held on for a 0-0 draw after battling for 90 minutes without breaching the other team’s goal.
